  • Advanced Leadership Programme

Programme Directors    : Prof. Ramnath Narayanswamy

    Programme Dates           : 30 January - 3 February 2017

Programme Venue         : M-24, IIMB Campus

    Programme Overview   :

Human spaces speak to us. Articulated for a particular function or purpose, spaces communicate what is worthwhile, meaningful and acceptable within their boundaries. Spaces are structured to welcome certain patterns of action and response, but not others.

Human spaces can also control us, although it is not what we design them to do. Spaces are meant to focus, not to imprison, our thoughts, actions and feelings. All too easily, however, our spaces become our boxes.

But we also need to be comfortable with abstract space. All manifest spaces have form and structure, but space itself does not. Like plasticine, waiting to be shaped by human hands, its possibilities are limitless.

  • Business Analytics & Intelligence (Batch-7) Module-8

Programme Directors    : Profs. U Dinesh Kumar, Ishwar Murthy & Rajluxmi V Murthy

    Programme Dates           : 5 – 10 February 2017

Programme Venue         : N-103, IIMB Campus

Programme Overview   : The theory of bounded rationality proposed by Nobel Laureate Herbert Simon is evermore significant today with increasing complexity of the business problems; limited ability of the human mind to analyze the alternative solutions and the limited time available for decision making. Introduction of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems has ensured availability of data in many organizations; however, traditional ERP systems lacked data analysis capabilities that can assist the management in decision making. Business Analytics is a set of techniques and processes that can be used to analyse data to improve business performance through fact-based decision-making. Business Analytics and Business Intelligence create capabilities for companies to compete in the market effectively. Business Analytics and Big Data has become one of the main functional areas in most companies. Analytics companies develop the ability to support their decisions through analytic reasoning using variety of statistical and mathematical techniques. Thomas Devonport in his book titled, “Competing on analytics: The new science of winning”, claims that a significant proportion of high-performance companies have high analytical skills among their personnel. On the other hand, a recent study has also revealed that more than 59% of the organizations do not have information required for decision making.

In a recent article based on a survey of nearly 3000 executives, MIT Sloan Management Review reported that there is striking correlation between an organization’s analytics sophistication and its competitive performance. The biggest obstacle to adopting analytics is the lack of knowhow about using it to improve business performance. Business Analytics uses statistical, operations research and management tools to drive business performance. Many companies offer similar kind of products and services to customers based on similar design and technology and find it difficult to differentiate their product/service from their competitors. However, companies such as Amazon, Google, HP, Netflix, Proctor and Gamble and Capital One use analytics as competitive strategy. Business Analytics helps companies to find the most profitable customer and allows them to justify their marketing effort, especially when the competition is very high. There is significant evidence from the corporate world that the ability to make better decisions improves with analytical skills. This course is designed to provide in-depth knowledge of business analytic techniques and their applications in improving business processes and decision-making.

The GMHE is a part-time certificate program that is aimed at high performing individuals in the healthcare domain, who are looking to transition from a functional role to a management role. This sectoral program is modelled on the highly successful Executive General Management Program (EGMP) offered under IIMB’s executive education programs for over a decade. The GMHE has been designed and developed by IIMB in partnership with apollo MedSkills, the skills arm of apollo hospitals. The academic content will be delivered by IIMB faculty, clinicians / administrators from some of the pre-eminent hospitals and healthcare service providers. There will also be frequent interactions with practioners from allied disciplines such as pharmaceuticals and insurance, which today play an important role in determining the success of healthcare delivery models. Participants in the GMHE will have ample opportunity to develop core business skills and competencies that are pertinent to their chosen domain within healthcare. They will involve themselves actively in case discussions, practicums, and interactive exercises in the classroom. • Big Data Analytics (Batch-1) Module-5

Programme Directors    : Profs. Dinesh Kumar, Shankar Venkatagiri & Pulak Ghosh

    Programme Dates           : 17 -18 February 2017

Programme Venue         : M-11, IIMB Campus

Programme Overview   : A triad of terms captures the essence of “big data”: volume, velocity and variety. The volume and pace at which data is created can challenge existing computing infrastructure. For example, every flight of a Boeing 777 can generate up to 1 terabyte (~1000 gigabytes) of data. Making sense of this data is imperative for decision making and troubleshooting. The theory of bounded rationality proposed by Nobel Laureate Herbert Simon is evermore significant today with the increased complexity of business problems; the human mind is constrained in its capacity to evaluate alternatives, given limited time to make conclusions.

Organisations large and small are forced to grapple with problems of big data, which challenge the existing tenets of data science and computing technologies. Techniques in predictive analytics rely heavily on the validity of statistical concepts such as independent and identically distributed (IID) random variables and the central limit theorem (CLT). When dealing with big data, the validity of these assumptions becomes questionable. Straightforward tasks such as interpreting descriptive statistics have their share of issues. We begin to question the utility of summary measures and diagrams.

Algorithms that work well on “small” datasets crumble when the size of the data extends into the gigabytes. Time series techniques must be revamped to handle streaming data in continuous time. Social media messages have data formats that are unfit to be represented by traditional databases. While these may appear to be difficult problems, there has been a tremendous progress in big data analytics. For example, columnar databases have significantly boosted query speeds. File systems can seamlessly distribute datasets on multiple hard drives, and facilitate analytics on them in real time. Finally, the free and open source nature of several big data platforms promotes rapid adoption.

  • How Leaders Bring Change

Programme Directors    : Profs. Sourav Mukherji & Rakesh Godhwani

    Programme Dates           : 27 February – 1 March 2017

Programme Venue         : M-21, IIMB Campus

Programme Overview   : Organizations need to grapple with change. While changes may be caused by a variety of external and internal factors, it is the ability of organizations to negotiate change successfully that decides their sustainability and competitive success. How do successful organizations change? While the answer may be complicated, existing research on organizations indicate one unequivocal factor – successful change processes are driven by leaders. In today’s dynamic world, the role of leadership is becoming indistinguishable from management of organizational change and it is this dimension of leadership that this programme is focused on. Based on real life case studies and practitioner oriented research, this programme would facilitate participants to think like a leader to persuade and communicate like a leader

Focusing on the above two qualities, the programme would create an invigorating learning platform for corporate executives who can thereby lead change initiatives in their organizations.

  • How do Indian Venture Capital Firms Manage Information Asymmetry Risks – Deal Syndication, Domain Specialization or Both?

Speaker: Kshitija Joshi, National Institute of Advanced Studies, IISc Campus

    Date: 8.2.2017

    Venue: P22 @ 2.30 PM

Abstract: Information asymmetry risks are the mainstay of VC funded projects. Among the multiple risk management mechanisms to deal with the same – deal syndication and portfolio specialization are the most prominently used. And yet, VCs differ distinctly in terms of their relative intensities of strategy usage – VC firms that are apparently similar in terms of their specialization focus could distinctly differ in terms of their syndication intensities and vice-versa. This study explores the reasons underlying such variation. Using the resource-based theory, we analyze empirical data on 72 active VC firms in India and explore how the composition of their financial, human and social capital impacts the nature and intensity of the risk-management strategies deployed by them.

Speaker Profile: Kshitija Joshi is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institute of Advanced Studies, IISc campus, Bangalore. She has recently completed her Ph.D from the Department of Management Studies, IISc, Bangalore in the area of VC Investing in India. Prior to her Ph.D, she has worked for about 12 years in the business analytics industry in Bangalore and Mumbai in reputed organizations such as Amazon, GE Capital, Modelytics Inc. and Reserve bank of India mainly in the arena of credit and fraud risk management. She also holds an M.Phil from the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research, Mumbai. She has several publications to her credit.

What role does ease of doing business play in this war for capital and investments? How is Bengal gearing up for this competition? What are its advantages, what are its challenges and limitations? How about labor costs and militancy? What about investments in education, skills and health? Does location play a role? What is the hype and what is the ground reality?
