  • How Leaders Bring Change

Programme Directors    : Profs. Sourav Mukherji & Rakesh Godhwani

    Programme Dates           : 27 February – 1 March 2017

Programme Venue         : M-21, IIMB Campus

Programme Overview   : Organizations need to grapple with change. While changes may be caused by a variety of external and internal factors, it is the ability of organizations to negotiate change successfully that decides their sustainability and competitive success. How do successful organizations change? While the answer may be complicated, existing research on organizations indicate one unequivocal factor – successful change processes are driven by leaders. In today’s dynamic world, the role of leadership is becoming indistinguishable from management of organizational change and it is this dimension of leadership that this programme is focused on. Based on real life case studies and practitioner oriented research, this programme would facilitate participants to think like a leader to persuade and communicate like a leader

Focusing on the above two qualities, the programme would create an invigorating learning platform for corporate executives who can thereby lead change initiatives in their organizations.

  • Big Data Analytics (Batch-1) Module-6 Executive Education Open Programme

Programme Title              : Big Data Analytics (Batch-1) Module-6
                                               Executive Education Open Programme

Programme Directors    : Profs. Dinesh Kumar, Shankar Venkatagiri & Pulak Ghosh

    Programme Dates           : 2 – 5 March 2017

Programme Venue         : M-11, IIMB Campus

    Programme Overview   :
A triad of terms captures the essence of “big data”: volume, velocity and variety. The volume and pace at which data is created can challenge existing computing infrastructure. For example, every flight of a Boeing 777 can generate up to 1 terabyte (~1000 gigabytes) of data. Making sense of this data is imperative for decision making and troubleshooting. The theory of bounded rationality proposed by Nobel Laureate Herbert Simon is evermore significant today with the increased complexity of business problems; the human mind is constrained in its capacity to evaluate alternatives, given limited time to make conclusions.

Organisations large and small are forced to grapple with problems of big data, which challenge the existing tenets of data science and computing technologies. Techniques in predictive analytics rely heavily on the validity of statistical concepts such as independent and identically distributed (IID) random variables and the central limit theorem (CLT). When dealing with big data, the validity of these assumptions becomes questionable. Straightforward tasks such as interpreting descriptive statistics have their share of issues. We begin to question the utility of summary measures and diagrams.

Algorithms that work well on “small” datasets crumble when the size of the data extends into the gigabytes. Time series techniques must be revamped to handle streaming data in continuous time. Social media messages have data formats that are unfit to be represented by traditional databases. While these may appear to be difficult problems, there has been a tremendous progress in big data analytics. For example, columnar databases have significantly boosted query speeds. File systems can seamlessly distribute datasets on multiple hard drives, and facilitate analytics on them in real time. Finally, the free and open source nature of several big data platforms promotes rapid adoption.

    Programme Dates           : 3 – 5 March 2017

Programme Venue         : M-21, IIMB Campus

    Programme Overview   :
In most firms, a majority of committed costs (upto 60%) can be traced to sourcing decisions. Also, the extent of outsourcing has risen to such an extent that rarely do firms make products entirely on their own. Instead, they rely on global sources for procuring products, sub-assemblies, services and capital equipment. Yet, many firms report failures in their global integration efforts. In particular, issues such as risk management, implementing sustainability in foreign contexts and setting contracts in foreign settings are becoming ‘hot’ issues. Through this seminar, we expose the participants to the current trends in global sourcing.

    Programme Overview   :
The well-being of a population requires the coordinated participation of hospitals and healthcare institutions, pharmaceutical firms and their products, diagnostic services, healthcare technologies, informatics, insurance providers, entrepreneurs and finally, the community of healthcare recipients.

Expenditure on healthcare is on the rise in India. Having reached the $100 billion mark in 2015, the spending is set to triple over the next 5 years. Consequently, there is a massive requirement for trained management professionals in healthcare. As with many other sectors, employees who are competent in their lines of work are identified to step into the shoes of managers. In the case of hospitals, senior doctors and nurses are charged with responsibilities that were not part of their training at college.

The GMHE is a part-time certificate program that is aimed at high performing individuals in the healthcare domain, who are looking to transition from a functional role to a management role. This sectoral program is modelled on the highly successful Executive General Management Program (EGMP) offered under IIMB’s executive education programs for over a decade. The GMHE has been designed and developed by IIMB in partnership with apollo MedSkills, the skills arm of apollo hospitals. The academic content will be delivered by IIMB faculty, clinicians / administrators from some of the pre-eminent hospitals and healthcare service providers. There will also be frequent interactions with practioners from allied disciplines such as pharmaceuticals and insurance, which today play an important role in determining the success of healthcare delivery models. Participants in the GMHE will have ample opportunity to develop core business skills and competencies that are pertinent to their chosen domain within healthcare. They will involve themselves actively in case discussions, practicums, and interactive exercises in the classroom. The program’s activities will help participants in networking with peers from diverse backgrounds.

The program is designed to make participants aware of the need and possibilities of creating high performance organizations that meet the aspirations of all stakeholders, and not just shareholders/owners. After establishing the framework for addressing the needs and aspirations of all stakeholders, the program will focus on strategies that are required to achieve excellence from the perspective of employees and society

However the challenge is, to get the clients to buy into this. When closure is challenging or client relationship management becomes discomforting, we may feel lost and may seek ways to reverse the trend. It is against this backdrop of acquiring clients and more importantly retaining them is what sets the men apart from the boys! This programme provides the conceptual understanding and practical insights for all those who are new to the field of management consulting or are in the process of changing their role and orientation from line managers to consultants.

Programme Venue         : Central Pergola, IIMB Campus

    Programme Overview   :
Healthcare is an important sector for any economy and especially for India which is going through several structural and social changes that potentially affect status of people’s health. Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, under its flagship National Rural Health Mission in the 11th five year plan, achieved considerable success in terms of healthcare indicators. Despite the government efforts, according to a McKinsey report, India is lagging in several healthcare infrastructure parameters such as doctors and bed densities compared to the WHO recommended guidelines1. Access to quality healthcare, service delivery, healthcare costs and financing are key issues faced by the country. Private sector in India plays a crucial role in addressing these health care issues. In 2009, private out-of-pocket expenditure in India accounted for 67% of the total expenditure on health.2 Healthcare service providers have to make several decisions to design healthcare service for different customer segments. In not-so-distant future, the healthcare provider would be required to deal with an enormous complex mix of challenges of an emerging economy, rapid unplanned urbanization, aging populations, global pandemics, environmental impacts on health, burden of non-communicable diseases, higher aspirations of patients, evidence-based-medicine, health insurance, medical tourism and above all, rising costs. Those having the ability to make an informed decision making would have greater odds of successfully facing some of the challenges, preparing beforehand and emerging as winners. ‘The primary differentiator in care at hospitals in the near future shall be the excellence in service, clinical care could still be supported by advances in technology, but service being a part of the culture needs rich reflections on the previous and prospective experiences to ensure a sound future. Analytics is thus the way to achieve the same.

    Programme Overview   :
“The last few decades have belonged to a certain kind of person with a certain kind of mind – computer programmers who could crank code, lawyers who could craft contracts, MBAs who could crunch numbers. But the keys to the kingdom are changing hands. The future belongs to a very different kind of person with a very different kind of mind – creators and empathizers, pattern recognizers, and meaning makers”. – Daniel H. Pink in A Whole New Mind: Why Right Brainers Will Rule the Future.

There is an increasing realization in the corporate world that managers are relying primarily on their left brained analytical minds to work on problems and issues, which would have well benefited from a combined use of both sides of the brain. The demand for right-brained thinking is now more in demand than ever because of the ways in which the global workplace is morphing. Left brained tasks are increasingly getting automated, leaving the more complex, big picture, conceptual tasks to be done by human beings. As a result the left-brain capabilities of analytical thinking and logical analysis are necessary but not sufficient. To be successful in the coming era, managers will also need to hone their right-brained qualities of inventiveness, storytelling, empathy, meaning, and play.

The panel will be moderated by Prof. G. Sabarinathan, faculty from the Finance and Accounting area at IIM Bangalore.

Although the seminar is free, registration is a must. Please click here to register. (http://mar17.doattend.com/).

About the seminar: The road to a venture’s financial success is a long and winding one. Capital infusions are important pit stops along this journey to help a venture accelerate on its chosen path.

Most of the discussion in the ecosystem is on raising Series A or pre-series funding for a start-up. At the same time, every start-up is founded with the hope that it will grow rapidly into a large and valuable business. Such growth will need substantial follow-on infusion of funds. In the past decade follow-on funding has been growing.

How does an entrepreneur go beyond Series A? What does it take? What needs to change and what stays the same? How long does it take and what can help?

The panel discussion will focus on key questions about such follow-on financing: When does a company start planning for Series B and beyond? How does it prepare an investment thesis that will attract investors into Series B and beyond? How do they raise this follow-on funding? What aspects of their business do they focus on to elicit follow-on investors? What role does the Series A investor play in this part? What expectations do the Series B and later stage investors have from the investment? What are some of the challenges in raising follow-on funding? How do the Series A investor and the subsequent stages manage the negotiation?

Answers to such questions and more will be discussed by investors who have considerable experience in early stage venture investing and by entrepreneurs who have successfully raised rounds beyond Series A.

Theme: Growth Funding for Startups: Going Beyond Series A

    Date: March 4 (Saturday) 2017

Time: 09:30 am to 12:45 pm

  • R&P Office to host seminar on ‘Distribution Costs, Product Quality, and Cross-Country Income Differences’ on March 16

Thursday’s talk to be delivered by Dr. Kunal Dasgupta from the Department of Economics, University of Toronto

10 March, 2017, Bengaluru: The Office of Research and Publications (R&P) at IIM Bangalore will be hosting a research seminar on ‘Distribution Costs, Product Quality, and Cross-Country Income Differences’, on March 16 (Thursday), 2017, from 2:30 pm, at Classroom P22. The talk will be delivered by Dr. Kunal Dasgupta, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, University of Toronto.

The focus areas of Dr. Dasgupta’s teaching are: International Trade and International Monetary Economics. His work on Learning and Knowledge Diffusion in a Global Economy and The Missing Middle in Developing Countries Revisited have been published in the Journal of International Economics, and the Indian Growth and Development Review respectively.

Background of talk: It is documented that the efficiency of international distribution systems varies across countries. Moreover, in a model of distribution and trade, an efficient distribution system creates comparative advantage in high quality products. Using the model’s structure and international shipment-level data, the efficiency of distribution systems for a sample of 74 countries was estimated, and it was found that the country at the 90th percentile of the distribution is almost three times more efficient than the one at the 10th percentile.

A calibrated version of the model that incorporates these efficiency estimates reveals that cross-country differences in the efficiency of export distribution systems explain almost forty percent of the observed cross-country differences in income. It also shows that policies that improve the efficiency of distribution systems can lead to significant welfare gains, mainly due to induced quality upgrading.

  • Research & Publications office to host seminar titled ‘Membership has its Benefits: Subscription Pricing for Free Delivery Services’ on March 15

Wednesday’s talk to be delivered by Dr. Anant Balakrishnan, McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin

10 March, 2017, Bengaluru: The Office of Research and Publications (R&P) at IIM Bangalore will be hosting a research seminar on ‘Membership has its Benefits: Subscription Pricing for Free Delivery Services’ on March 15 (Wednesday), 2017, from 11.30 am, at Classroom P22. The talk will be delivered by Dr. Anant Balakrishnan, McCombs School of Business, University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Anant Balakrishnan is the Associate Dean for Research and holds the Kenneth M. and Susan T. Jastrow, II Chair at the McCombs School of Business. He has previously held faculty appointments in the business schools at MIT, Penn State, and Purdue. He holds a Ph.D. from MIT, and B. Tech (Electronics) and MBA degrees from IIT and IIM. Dr. Balakrishnan’s research and teaching interests include operations and supply chain management, management science, and telecommunications. His research focuses on developing effective optimization models and methods to support planning and managerial decision making for operations, logistics, and telecommunications. Dr. Balakrishnan has worked closely with many manufacturing and service firms, and has published in leading journals such as Management Science, Networks, Operations Research, Transportation Science, Manufacturing & Service Operations Management, and Mathematical Programming.

Background of talk: In recent years, many internet retailers have supplemented their traditional pay-for-delivery (PFD) pricing by introducing membership plans that provide free delivery services for a fixed annual subscription fee. Intuitively, these free-delivery-subscription (FDS) plans are likely to attract precisely those consumers for whom the delivery costs exceed the subscription fee. Indeed, data from leading internet retailers show that their actual annual delivery costs can be as high as twice the revenues they get from delivery charges and subscription fees. Why then do retailers offer FDS plans? To understand how the FDS option can increase firm profits, a novel utility-based model has been developed that highlights two main advantages, observed in practice, of introducing a FDS plan, namely, the ‘lift’ in a current customer’s demand when she subscribes to the FDS plan instead of purchasing using the PFD option, and the possibility of attracting new consumers. The modeling framework considers heterogeneity among consumers along two dimensions – their utility for the product and their preference (opportunity cost) for purchasing from the firm using the PFD option. Only mild assumptions were imposed, and particular utility functions or distributions of opportunity cost were not required. For this general setting, it is demonstrated that economic reasons alone suffice to explain the lift in demand, without assuming any separate behavioural factors. It is shown that offering the FDS option increases firm profits even though the optimal subscription fee is not sufficient to cover the firm’s actual shipping cost. Moreover, the FDS option also benefits consumers. For the FDS option, the two strategies of either introducing a single ‘Universal’ plan or offering multiple ‘Tiered’ plans (with varying subscription fees and free delivery limits) have been considered. The analysis of these strategies, augmented with computational results, yields several interesting managerial insights on the drivers of the optimal policy, profits, and market share, and their sensitivity to product, consumer, and market characteristics. The approach and results also apply to other related contexts such as subscription pricing for information goods and access services.

Topic: Membership has its Benefits: Subscription Pricing for Free Delivery Services

  • Research & Publications office to host seminar titled ‘Culture and cognition: Does living in a low-solidarity community impede recognition of a Pareto-improving tax-spending program?’ on March 14

Tuesday’s talk to be delivered by Dr. Rohini Somanathan, Professor of Economics, Delhi School of Economics

10 March, 2017, Bengaluru: The Office of Research and Publications (R&P) at IIM Bangalore will be hosting a research seminar on ‘Culture and cognition: Does living in a low-solidarity community impede recognition of a Pareto-improving tax-spending program?’ on March 14 (Tuesday), 2017, from 2:30 pm, at Classroom P22. The talk will be delivered by Dr. Rohini Somanathan, Professor of Economics, Delhi School of Economics.

Prof. Rohini Somanathan received her Ph.D from Boston University and held faculty positions at Emory University, the University of Michigan and the Indian Statistical Institute before joining the Delhi School of Economics in 2005. Her research focuses on how social institutions interact with public policies to shape patterns of economic and social inequality. She is particularly interested in exploring the intellectual and ideological environment within which state policy is created and justified. Within the broad area of development economics, she has worked on group identity and public goods, access to microfinance, child nutrition programs and environmental health. She is also on the Executive Committee of the International Economic Association, on the governing body of the Indira Gandhi Institute for Development Research and a trustee of the NGO SRIJAN.

Background of talk: It is widely recognized that the kinds of social patterns that individuals have experienced influence how they think and conceptualize situations that they encounter. The question is: whether the experience of living in a community with a low level of solidarity impedes the ability of individuals within it to recognize a Pareto-improving tax-spending program. An experiment was conducted in which men from 24 villages played a social contracting game. This is a variant of a public goods game in which participants first vote over the mandated contribution before making a decision to contribute. Higher mandated contributions are Pareto improving. Survey data from the same villages was used to construct a village solidarity index based on responses to questions on village level trust and benefits from government programs. Compared to players from villages with high solidarity, players from villages with low solidarity choose lower rules. This suggests that their choices reflect their everyday expectations based on life in their villages. Individuals from villages with lower solidarity appear to have greater difficulty conceptualizing a Pareto-improving public program.

Topic: Culture and cognition: Does living in a low-solidarity community impede recognition of a Pareto-improving tax-spending program?

Speaker: Prof. Rohini Somanathan, Delhi School of Economics
