This programme examines what it takes to lead and manage multinational firms in India and other emerging markets that have many similar characteristics.

India is on the minds of business leaders everywhere. Within a few decades, India will be the world’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies. But it is also a complex and challenging market, with a reputation for corruption, uncertainty, and stultifying bureaucracy.  Many global companies are therefore cautious when it comes to investing in India.  But India is not a market that can be ignored.  A $2 trillion economy growing at 5-6%, it is an important market. Even more importantly, chaotic India is an archetype for most emerging markets, many of which present similar challenges but not the same potential. Succeeding in India therefore becomes a litmus test for your ability to succeed in other emerging markets. If you can win in India, you can win everywhere.

Emerging markets like India are very tough places but for most multinational firms the bigger challenge to succeeding in them may well be the internal culture and mind-set at headquarters. The unwillingness to make a long-term commitment to the new market or to adequately trust local leadership, combined with the propensity to rigidly replicate the products, business models, and operating systems that have worked at home drives many companies to a “midway trap” that results in these markets remaining an irrelevantly small contributor to global growth and profits.

This programme takes India as representative of many emerging markets and looks at what it take to win in this complex and challenging region. How do you deal with the chaos—and even prosper from it? How do you deal with corruption? With bureaucratic logjams and policy uncertainty?  What kind of leadership do you need both on the ground and, even more importantly, at headquarters? Should you consider a joint venture or acquisitions? How do you develop a winning strategy? How do you decide what elements of your global model to replicate and which elements need to be localized?  What kind of an organization structure will facilitate agility in dynamic markets?  How do you drive innovation locally? 

The programme also looks at the challenges faced by Indian firms as they become more global.  Emerging market MNCs going into Africa or the US, face challenges not dissimilar to Microsoft, P&G or Apple entering India.

The programme ends with a look at globalization.  How is globalization different from internationalization? What kind of leadership will it take to succeed and how do you develop such leaders? What is the role of Boards in globalization?

Dr. S Raghunath is Professor of Corporate Strategy and Policy at IIM Bangalore. He specializes in Strategic Alliances, and Strategic Leadership. He has researched these topics, taught them to Post Graduate and Doctoral students and executives, and consulted with major Indian companies and multinational corporations. He is the Chairperson of the India Chapter of the Academy of International Business, the apex body for research relating to International Business. He was the Global Cycle Director for the International Masters Programme for Practicing Managers (IMPM, 2011-12.

He was a Visiting Scholar at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University (1990-1991) where he engaged in research in strategy making in IT companies. He was also a Visiting Professor at INSEAD, France; EUROMED, Marseilles and HEC, Paris, University of Buckingham, UK; RMIT School of Business; Melbourne, Australia; His research has focused on Structuring and Managing Alliances, Multinational Subsidiary Strategy and Organization, Integrating Acquisitions and Networkbased organizations and e-business strategy and models. He has published several papers, case studies and book chapter and has been quoted in publications such as Economic Times, Business Line and the Computer Today and he wrote a column on Business Strategy for Outlook Business. He has written extensively in the areas of international alliances for practitioner and academic communities. Dr. Raghunath is on the board of directors of National Minerals Exploration Corporation, KTwo Techologies Spire Technologies, KIOCL and National Venture Capital Fund. He is a Registered Consultant with the Office of Project Services, UNDP, New York.

Ravi Venkatesan is the former Chairman of Microsoft India and currently a Venture Partner at Unitus Seed Fund which invests in early stage social enterprises. He is also founder and Chairman of Social Venture Partners India, a network of engaged philanthropists addressing social problems through venture philanthropy. Ravi is a director on the boards of AB Volvo and Infosys Ltd. and the author of a newly released and critically acclaimed book “Conquering the Chaos: Win in India, Win Everywhere” published by Harvard Business Review. He advises many global companies on their emerging market strategies.

As Chairman of Microsoft India between 2004 and 2011, Ravi helped build India into Microsoft’s secondlargest presence in the world and one of its fastest growing markets. Microsoft India was consistently rated one of the country’s most respected companies, amongst the most admired brands, and one of India’s best employers. Ravi was instrumental in creating Microsoft India’s Project Shiksha, a computer literacy program which has so far trained over 35 million school children in India. In 2011, Ravi was voted India’s Most Influential Multinational Company CEO in the annual survey conducted by The Economic Times, India’s leading business newspaper.

Prior to joining Microsoft, as the Chairman of the publicly listed Cummins India, Ravi led its transformation into the country’s leading provider of power solutions and automotive engines. He helped establish the Cummins College of Engineering, India’s first engineering college for women, in Pune.

Ravi has a BS in engineering from IIT Bombay, an MS from Purdue University, and a MBA from Harvard Business School where he was a Baker Scholar. He is a recipient of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay’s Distinguished Alumnus Award and Purdue University’s Distinguished Engineering Alumnus Award. He was recently voted as one of India’s best management thinkers by Thinkers50.
