Overview / Objective of the Programme

Management teaching is a specialized competence with three specific sub-competencies: course design, class preparation and delivery, and creation of specific teaching aids. This programme seeks to address these competencies in the context of management teaching.

Use of technology in higher education has moved beyond teaching aids to MOOCs and asynchronous modes of learning. This programme will introduce participants to the nuances of digital learning, including flipped classrooms and blended programmes.

Programme contents / Outline

  • Course design: Deciding the positioning of the course within the programme; designing the flow of modules and topics in the course; defining the assurance of learning (AOL) and various forms of evaluations (exams, quizzes, assignments, projects, and simulation games); and decisions around pedagogy mix in the courses.

 

  • Class preparation and delivery: Specific focus on case method of teaching; case selection, pre-class preparation, class room choreography, student engagement, managing blackboard plans; customizing teaching styles to different audiences; creating your own teaching style

 

  • Case writing: Specific tools and techniques for writing management cases; defining case leads and learning outcomes; writing the case narrative; sourcing data for primary and secondary cases; the case writing project as a research programme; and writing effective teaching notes. The split model of the programme allows for participants to try their hand at writing a case in the break between the modules. The programme would also include a case writing practicum.

Target Audience

  • Early career teachers (up to ten years of post Ph.D teaching experience).

 

Pedagogy

The programme will use a multiplicity of pedagogies, including case method of teaching.

Programme Schedule

  • 4 days plus 3 days
  • 4 days in summer with a teaching focus; and 3 days in winter with a writing focus
  • Time in between spent on writing a case/ instructional note which will be presented/ discussed during the winter module

Programme Fee and Payment

Programme fee is Rs 1,00,000/- + GST (applicable rates) per participant, payable in three instalments as per the following
schedule:

Rs 50,000/- + Applicable GST - I instalment on Admission
Rs 50,000/- + Applicable GST - II instalment, 10 November 2018

Please Note:

All enrolments are subject to review and approval by the programme director. Joining Instructions will be sent to the selected candidates 10 days prior the start of the programme. Kindly do not make your travel plans unless you receive the letter from IIMB.

A certificate of participation will be awarded to the participants by IIMB.

  • The programme fee should be received by the Executive Education Office before the programme commencement date.
  • In case of cancellations, the fee will be refunded only if a request is received at least 15 days prior to the start of the programme.
  • If a nomination is not accepted, the fee will be refunded to the person/ organisation concerned.

Srinivasan R is Professor of Corporate Strategy & Policy at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore. His current research focuses on characterizing rapid growth firms; studying platform-mediated networks; and strategic decision making in top management teams.

Srinivasan received his doctoral degree from Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad in 1998. He received the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund scholarship for his doctoral research at IIM Ahmedabad. He worked for about eight years at IIM Lucknow before joining IIM Bangalore. His areas of teaching at the postgraduate and doctoral levels have been Platform business models, Corporate Strategy, Competitiveness, and Strategy Process Research. He has been visiting faculty at the Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany and the University of Rome Tor Vergata, delivering courses and lectures on Platform Business Models and Open Innovation.

Srinivasan has coauthored a textbook on strategic management and a research-based book on knowledge management in the Indian context. He has published papers and cases in several international journals. He has authored a number of cases on Indian organizations on growth, strategic management, innovation, and knowledge management. He has presented his research in a number of international academic conferences.

His current research focuses on studying firms operating in platform-mediated networks. He closely works as advisor and researches on a variety of firms that create and operate platform-based business models. He engages with the industry in several ways – through executive education (strategy and leadership development for senior managers); entrepreneurial education (design and delivery of management programs for entrepreneurs); consulting assignments (consulting on strategizing and growth); executive coaching (functional coaching of CEOs and family business owners); research (including case writing highlighting best practices), and strategy facilitation (including design and facilitation of annual strategic planning sessions).

He has been Vice President of the Case Research Society of India, and has mentored a number of faculty and doctoral students in pedagogy and case teaching & writing. He has actively engaged with institutions including the NITIE, IIMs, CCS NIAM, and Christ University in designing and delivering faculty development programmes, with focus on case writing and teaching.

 

 

Selection

Selection to the programme would be done based on the careful review of the following two documents, to be submitted by each applicant,

Nomination letters

Candidates must provide a nomination letter along with the application form for the Teaching Programme for Early Career Management Teachers. The nomination letters must be completed and signed by the Head of the Institution/ School/ University, and must be on the institutional letterhead. It should clearly state that the signee has the authority to nominate the candidate for the programme.

The nomination letter should be a maximum of two pages in length and address the following points.

  • Rationale for the choice of candidate: highlight the factors used to determine why the candidate is being nominated to the programme.
  • The pedagogical environment in the institution: elaborate on the pedagogical leanings of the institution, especially at the post-graduate/ masters level; and why such a programme would be useful to a candidate from your institution
  • Potential benefits to the selected candidate: highlight if the nomination to this programme is part of a well-thought out strategy of the institution and the candidate’s career and development goals

Profile

Candidates must provide a detailed profile of themselves along with the application form for the Teaching Programme for Early Career Management Teachers. The profiles should be completed by the candidates and self-signed.
