The Distinguished Alumnus Award (DAA) is an award given every year by IIMB to its alumni in recognition of achievements of exceptional merit. The first Distinguished Alumnus Award was given in 2007.
Alumni who have excelled in their chosen field of endeavour and made outstanding contributions, are recognized for accomplishments in:
• Entrepreneurship
• Management
• Research / Education
• Social Service
The award winner is presented with a plaque and a citation on the institute rolls.
Ashok Sinha, PGP '77
A seasoned petroleum industry executive, Mr Ashok Sinha took over as Chairman & Managing Director of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) on August 19, 2005. BPCL is India's second largest integrated oil refining and marketing company. The BPCL group which includes the subsidiary company Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) had a turnover of Rs 862.23 billion in 2005-06 (USD 19.16 billion). He is also the Chairman of the Board of Bharat Oman Refineries Limited, a joint venture with Oman Oil Company which is setting up a new grass root oil refinery and NRL. He is also a Director on the Boards of Bharat Shell Limited, a joint venture with Shell International and Petronet LNG Limited, a publicly listed company promoted by four of India's leading public sector oil companies, which is engaged in importing LNG and setting up LNG terminals along with associated facilities to supply natural gas to consumers.
Mr Sinha received a B.Tech degree in Electrical Engineering from IIT Kanpur. This was followed by a short stint in with the Indian subsidiary of International Computers Limited, UK. Mr Sinha completed his Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGP 1975-77) from the IIM Bangalore, with specialization in Finance.
Vasanth Tilak Naik '93
Vasanth Tilak Naik is educator, researcher and manager, all rolled into one. Currently Naik is Managing Director, Nomura International and is based in London. He heads a team called quantitative strategies group which is a part of Nomura's fixed income research division.
Naik completed his B.Com from Gujarat University and then went on to doing PGP at IIM Bangalore, graduating in 1983. Later he also completed his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1988.
After ten years of teaching at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, Naik joined Lehman brothers in 1998 as Director, Interest Rate Strategies, Fixed Income Research in London. In 2005, Naik became the Managing Director at Lehman Brothers. According to his colleagues, Naik is a perfect example of an intellectual powerhouse and a brilliant strategist.
Naik's strong interests lie in research, and in the finance academia he is viewed as a very successful academic and researcher. At the University of British Columbia, he was closely involved with the running of the MBA Program and also taught several courses in investments, derivatives and risk management for both undergraduate and MBA programmes.
