The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) celebrated its Thirty-Eighth Foundation Day on October 28, 2011. This year, Dr K VijayRaghavan, Director, National Centre for Biological Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research was invited to deliver the annual Foundation Day Lecture.
The event began with an invocation by Poornaa V (PGP I), followed by the lighting of the lamp by the chief guest Dr K VijayRaghavan; member of the Board of Governors at IIMB Mr Subroto Bagchi; Director Professor Pankaj Chandra; and Dean (Academic) Professor Trilochan Sastry.
Professor Pankaj Chandra then presented some highlights of the Institute over the past six months. He stated that Eduniversal has ranked IIMB as the # 1 B-school in Central Asia for the fourth consecutive year. In another major milestone, Harvard Business publishing will distribute IIMB teaching cases globally. Professor Chandra acknowledged the various significant achievements by the faculty of IIMB. Commenting on the IIMB's commitment to society, he praised the work of EPGP students in continuing 'Prayaas', a social responsibility initiative for the second year running. Introducing the chief guest, Professor Chandra said, "Dr K VijayRaghavan is a luminary in the field of Life Sciences".
Delivering the Foundation Day Lecture on 'Life Sciences Research in a Dynamic World: From Laboratory to Society and Back', Dr VijayRaghavan addressed three points: he argued why life sciences are special and adventurous, who can grasp these opportunities and the proper way of succeeding in such an endeavour. He said, "Science is an agent of transformation and scientists are harbingers of change". Dr VijayRaghavan stated that Life Sciences in a dynamic world is affected by scientific and institutional fragility, poor interaction with society and poor intelligence connectivity. In conclusion, Dr VijayRaghavan said that sound management can help Life Sciences undergo a smooth transformation.
Mr Subroto Bagchi, senior Member of Board of Governors of IIMB and Vice-Chairman MindTree Ltd presided over the event. He said, "By managing growth we can conserve Life Sciences and values'.
On the occasion of Foundation Day, the Distinguished Alumni Awards for the year 2011 were presented to Mr Abhishek Mukherjee (PGP '76), Professor Praveen K Kopalle (PGP '88) and Mr Sonjoy Chatterjee (PGP '94).
Professor Trilochan Sastry, Dean (Academic) delivered the vote of thanks.
About Dr K VijayRaghavan
Professor K VijayRaghavan is the Director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).
Dr VijayRaghavan studied Chemical Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai. During 1984-1988, he was a Research Fellow and then a Senior Research Fellow at the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California, USA. Dr VijayRaghavan returned to TIFR from Caltech in 1988 to work with Obaid Siddiqi to establish NCBS. He has been NCBS's Director since 1995 and is also the interim head of the new Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (inStem), in Bangalore.
