The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) was founded in the year 1973 with the charter to be a centre of excellence in management. Around late '90's, leaders of the software industry realized the need for domain expertise and leadership competencies for sustaining the growth of the industry and growing up on the value chain. IIM Bangalore with its reputation for delivering 'Excellence through Partnership' was the natural choice of the software industry to help bridge the gap. IIM Bangalore in collaboration with the industry designed PGSEM Program, a part-time post-graduate diploma in software enterprise management.

The unique philosophy of PGSEM program is collaborative learning and knowledge creation. The program participants act as important links between the industry and the institute. The faculties at IIM Bangalore vastly appreciate the two-way knowledge sharing within the classroom. Project assignments facilitate the participants to work on live organizational challenges and contribute towards knowledge creation and learning.

Ever since its establishment in 1998, PGSEM has kept in pace with India's changing environment in IT sector and groomed the participants to contribute towards the growth of the Indian software industry. PGSEM now recruits around 75 participants each year from a large pool of applicants. Its selectivity is unmatched in its class of programs across the world. Students juggle a demanding study routine with a full-time job and family obligations. Presently, PGSEM program has more than 500 alumnus and many of its alumni now occupy top positions in industry.
