Corporate Environmental responsibility and the market: A study of Indian Firms

Under support from Ministry of Environment & Forests (MOEF), GoI, a research study on Corporate Environmental Management practices in the Indian industry was completed by IIM Bangalore. The methodology involved surveying secondary information disclosed by India’s most valuable companies on their websites and in their annual reports. The study focused on the 100 most valuable private sector companies and 50 most valuable public sector companies as evaluated by Business Today (BT 500). The companies were then classified into five main Industry sectors namely Manufacturing, Mining, Electricity, Services and Construction. All environmental and social initiatives by these companies were then coded and aggregated for analysis. The key questions answered were how well does the publically available information (as put forth by the companies themselves) correspond to their actual initiatives? If there is a mismatch what are the reasons for the same? What are the implications of the above for the environmental and economic performances of firms?
