Ganesh
N. Prabhu is Professor of Corporate Strategy & Policy at the Indian Institute
of Management at Bangalore (IIMB), India. He is currently on the governing
board of the Strategic Management Forum of India, on the board of
studies of the International Institute of Information Management Mysore
and the board of studies of the Indian
Institute of Plantation Management, Bangalore. He is a nominated member on
the India Design Council of the Government of India and a governing
council member of The Strategy Academy Knowledge Centre Society. He received the Best Young
Teacher Award in 2000 from the Association
of Indian Management Schools (AIMS). He also jointly won the AIMS Best
Research Paper Award in 2002 and was second in the AIMS Case Writing
Competition in 2003. He was earlier on the Editorial Board of
the Journal of Management, USA for three and half years. At IIMB he was
earlier Chairperson, Post Graduate Program for two years and Chairperson,
Placement for three and half years.
Ganesh's
areas of research and teaching are product innovation, business strategy and
entrepreneurship. He is a fellow (doctorate) (1996) of the Indian Institute of Management at Ahmedabad
(IIMA), India with specialization in strategy. His doctoral dissertation at
IIMA, won the PD Agarwal -TCI Award for Doctoral Research in Management.
He has published in the influential Academy of Management Review and has
papers in technology management in five international refereed journals - Research
Policy, International Journal of Technology Management,
Technology Analysis & Strategic Management, Technovation and Science Technology & Society.
He has also published cases in three international journals Greener
Management International, Asian Case Research Journal, and Journal of
Corporate Citizenship, and a highly cited paper on social entrepreneurship
in the journal Career Development International. His joint paper was
nominated for the Carolyn Dexter Award at the Academy of Management
Meeting 2001. His papers and cases have been published in books published by Guerini
e Associati Publishers (Italy) and International NGO Research and
Training Center (UK).
As a
faculty at IIMB since 1996, Ganesh teaches doctoral courses in strategy process
research and qualitative research as well as MBA courses and executive program
modules in business strategy, global strategy and product innovation. He has
been on the dissertation advisory committees for several doctoral students at
IIMB and on dissertation examination committees at both IIMB and IIML. He
has conducted four commissioned or sponsored case writing projects - two cases
on corporate-NGO partnerships for the International NGO Research and
Training Center (UK), a case on the Indian dairy industry for Tetra Pak
India, a jointly developed a set of cases on software product development
for the University of Pennsylvania Center for the Advanced Study of India
and a case research for the N S Raghavan Center for Entrepreneurial Learning
at IIMB. He was included in two major India-UK
Science Bridge proposals with Imperial
College, UK and Cambridge University,
UK as well as in an Italy-India-China
joint proposal with Scuola
Superiore Sant'Anna, Pisa, Italy on promoting
university-industry relations.
Ganesh
has consulted for the National Dairy Development Board (2005) and
jointly consulted on major restructuring plans for HMT Machine Tools Limited
(2004) and for HMT Limited (Tractors Division) (2004). He has
conducted top management workshops on business strategy and product innovation
on invitation for Honeywell India (2008),
Tata Group (2007), ITC International Business Division (2005), Tetra
Pak India (2002) and Tessaract Design (2000). He has also conducted
sessions on business strategy, global strategy and product innovation for
senior executive groups from the Strategy
Academy (2009, 2008), HAL Management
Academy (2009), Crompton Greaves
(2008), Quest (2007), Oracle (2007), Union Bank of India
(2009, 2007, 2006), Honeywell (2006), Indian Oil (2005) and has
led visioning workshops for top management teams of several small firms as part
of the Business Growth Program. He was included as external consultant
by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu on a
major consulting contract.
Within
IIMB, Ganesh has jointly designed and coordinated several open executive
education programs - Strategic Analysis for Competitive Advantage, NID-IIMB
Joint Program on Design and Strategy, Creating Successful New Products, and Creating Successful Software
Products. The Management Program for Women Entrepreneurs is a summer
program jointly coordinated by him every year since 2004 to enable aspiring
women entrepreneurs to develop their business plans. Earlier, as a
member of a three year British Council sponsored higher education link
program with Oxford Brookes University UK, he jointly developed a Management
Program for Trainers of Women Entrepreneurs that was held in 2002 and 2003
in Bangalore. He has jointly coordinated several cycles of the Executive
General Management Program, Business Growth Program, Strategic Management Teachers
Program and has designed and lead corporate partnership executive
education programs for Amul, Cognizant Technology Solutions, Reliance
Industries, Trent Retail, Seimens and Wipro-GE Medical
Systems.
Ganesh has a masters in rural management (1989) from the Institute of Rural Management Anand and a bachelors in physics (1987) from Bombay University (Elphinstone College). Prior to his doctoral studies he held executive positions for two years (1989-91) in the National Dairy Development Board working in a major turnaround project in Punjab State, India (for one year), in Amul Dairy (for six months) and several short projects (for six months). He was born in Mumbai (Bombay) and had his schooling in Loyola School, Jamshedpur and Bishop Cotton Boy's School, Bangalore. He likes listening to Hindustani Classical Music (especially Kumar Gandharva), watching movies and sports events (especially F1). He married Chitra in 1997 and they have a son Ninad born in 2000.

Methods, Madrid, 2010. He has been on the Technical Program Committee and Session
Chair of the Fourth International
Conference on Management of Innovation and Technology of the IEEE Society
Singapore held at Bangkok (2008). He was Chair of the Product Development
Management Association India Conference 2007 and was its Co-chair in 2006.
He was on the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Entrepreneurship,
Innovation and Small Business Conference, Barcelona (2005) and the European Conference on Research
Methods in Business and Management UK, (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008). He
has presented refereed papers at the Academy of Management Meetings at
Honolulu (2005), at Washington DC (2001) and at Chicago (1999). He has also presented papers at the Triple
Helix Conference at Singapore (2007), the Asia Pacific Management
Conferences at Melbourne (2007) and Bangkok (2006), at the International
School of Management and Technology (SIAF), Volterra, Pisa (2006), at the Scuola Superiore di
Studi Universitari e di Perfezionamento Sant'Anna, Pisa (2006), the Entrepreneurship,
Innovation and Small Business Conference in Barcelona (2005), Casa Asia
- Promo Madrid Meeting in Madrid (2005), the European Conference on Research Methods in Business and Management

reviewer for the International Business Review and conferences of the Asia
Academy of Management and the International Management Development
Association. He is a member of the Academy of Management, Asia
Academy of Management and the International Society for Third Sector
Research. He was a plenary speaker on business opportunities in user
experience design at the USID Foundation
Conference 2008. He was an invited panelist at an Intel seminar on innovation for emerging markets, at a Honeywell seminar on customer focus and
at the Melton Foundation seminar on
business innovation.
